It has long been a tradition to make a marriage proposal as memorable as possible. Once you’ve found the right thing, you probably won’t have to do this again. So why not put all your effort into surprising your future spouse? This is exactly the path John Nicotera took when he seized the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to propose to his lover Erica Pendrak during an extremely rare cosmic event.
If you are not a “space junkie” like John, you may not know that a comet named Neowise recently appeared on our horizon. This long-period comet, located 160 million miles from Earth, has become bright enough to be visible with the naked eye from July 15 to 23 in the Northern Hemisphere. The most interesting thing about the comet is that only humans can see it every 6,800 years, which makes it an extremely rare sighting and perfect for John’s suggestion.
As it turned out, this was not the idea of the original proposal. The man planned to propose to Erica on her trip to Oregon. I bought the trip for her Christmas present. When I planned the trip, I was planning to propose to her in Crater Lake National Park, so I had the idea of a proposal in my head for 68 months, ”said John Bored Panda. Unfortunately, it had to be canceled, but John had a better idea. “I wanted to make a special suggestion that we could share, and one day I came up with the idea for the Comet. I always read about current events / sightings and everything to do with space. Erica has seen countless SpaceX rocket launches with me. So when I asked Erica, I was hoping she didn’t see this as out of the ordinary, ”she said.
John didn’t have much time to plan and told us that everything was happening very fast. “In a window of 5 days I had an idea for the Neowise proposal, I found a place in Old Forge, which my good friend Tim Leach (the photographer who took our photo) told me about, and I got engaged.” On the 18th, what his girlfriend Erica thought was a trip to John’s family camp in Old Forge, New York, was the most romantic marriage proposal.
“Each photo was taken with an exposure time of 710 seconds. Erica and I smiled at each other the best we could. When he looked into my eyes I knew what I was going to do, but I also went back and lived all our moments together, the life we made together, and I have never felt so happy in my life. Looking at the heart and soul of someone who is as special to me as could be, no sound, nothing. Just totally fascinated by the moment we live in then, but also by what was to come ”, John describes the precious moment.
“My thoughts were nowhere else than at this very moment. I was in a state of utter euphoria because I knew how in love she was and how perfect that moment and all night were. It was the best time of my life and it came together like a dream come true. As Erica and I spend together with each photo, Tim who perfectly captures the moment, with this photo Erica and I will be able to relive this moment we had and to cherish the rest of our lives. Words cannot express how happy I am to be engaged now and how grateful I am to Tim that he captured everything so perfectly. ”
When he finally asked the question, they both had to sit still for another 7 seconds. “Erica was completely overwhelmed, she had no idea at the time what was going to happen. She was just as incredulous as I was (that she worked as perfectly as she hoped). I still can’t believe how everything fit together so perfectly, it’s literally a dream come true. ”
The recordings of the happy moment quickly conquered the Internet and left people captivated by the breathtaking sight. The photos were even retweeted by astronaut Garrett Reisman, who congratulated the couple. They were completely incredulous that they had managed to go viral. As far as it goes viral, it’s so wild to think about it. We live together in the small town of Utica, and when we just think of people from across the country and around the world who share and listen to our story, it is absolutely overwhelming, ”said John.
