Canadian man Mike Digout discovered the amazing goose when he was out for a walk along the Saskatchewan riverbank near where he lives in Saskatoon. He was surprised when he saw the goose taking care of 16 goslings which is far more than her natural share of babies. But then the amount jumped to 25, then 30 and then 47. He says everyday it seemed like she had a bigger group.
- Canadian man, Mike Digout, discovered this caring ‘Mama Goose’ who is looking after 47 goslings
This lockdown due to the coronavirus pandemic made Mike take walks along the Saskatchewan riverbank near where he lives in Saskatoon. One day on his walk, Mike was intrigued by some Geese’s activity, noticing that they were looking for places to nest.
- Then in May, he noticed the first batch of goslings had hatched so he started paying more attention to them
“They’re so cute when they’re little – like little tennis balls with legs,” Digout told the Dodo. “So I started taking pictures of the goslings while I was waiting for the beavers to come around.”
He then started noticing something weird, one goose in particular seemed to have more than her natural share of babies. At first, there were 16 goslings trailing her then the amount jumped to 25 and then 30.
Digout said: “I was stunned that this mom had 16 babies, so I started going back every night looking for this mom and her goslings. And every day it seemed like she had a bigger group.”
- It turned out that the ‘mama Goose’ was caring for the goslings of different goose families
This is known as a gang brood which is common in urban and suburban areas that have a lot of nests.
Mike said: “It was incredible how calm she was with so many goslings around. She seems like such a patient mom.”
Now, the incredible gang has split into three large family units, but this caring mama Goose and her mate are still caring for about 25 goslings.
