While battling the coronavirus in the hospital, a California man had an added collection of stresses and worries; his wife was literally giving birth to their daughter in the same hospital!
At first, Milo McCabe’s condition looked bleak, and doctors weren’t sure if he would survive the illness. He couldn’t breathe and said it felt like he was “drowning in his own body.”
When employees at Kaiser Permanente Baldwin Park Medical Center learned that Milo was receiving treatment just one floor below his very pregnant wife, they scrambled to coordinate a very unconventional birthing experience.
“I am going to be there. I am going to be there. And low and behold, I couldn’t be there. So this is the way they came up for me to be there.”
Staff set up a video chat so that Milo could watch Roxanne deliver baby Emberly via Zoom in real time.
Milo was even able to coach Roxanne from the computer screen. It certainly isn’t the same as being in the same room for such a monumental moment, but having her husband at her bedside in some form was more than she could have asked for under these circumstances.
Incredibly, Milo began to recover when his daughter was born, and just three days later, he was discharged from the hospital.
