Everyone enjoyed spa days here and there. You can go to the spa, listen to some relaxing music, maybe get a massage or facial and relax a bit. Well, spas and beauty centers in Israel add a personal touch to this relaxing day. This is a new service they call Snake Massage. Yes, you read that right. The snake massage costs only $80.00, so about the same price you would pay for any other massage. But during a snake massage they will place large snakes all over their body, where they can crawl up and down their back, spine, and even their face. The snake species they tend to use include the California and Florida royal snakes, corn snakes, and milk snakes.
If you are able to relax and not completely freak out, spa owner Ada Barak says it can be a very soothing and relaxing experience. I find this hard to believe.
Because of their size, the heavy king and corn snakes offer a very relaxing kneading sensation. I’m guessing Barak had to figure this one out on her own.
It might take a little bit of time to get over the fact that you have snakes slithering all over your skin, but Barak says people will find the contact with the snakes to be very stress relieving.
“Some people said that holding the snakes made them feel better, relaxed,” Barak said “One old lady said it was soothing, like a cold compress.”
For obvious reasons, the snakes are all non-venomous. We don’t need any tragedies happening on the massage table. But the size of the snake depends on the type of massage the client wants.
Larger snakes are used for more of a deep muscle tension massage. Whereas the smaller snakes are going to be used on lighter massages because they tend to create a ‘fluttering’ effect.
To get started, the massage therapist will wash the snakes, then dry them off.
Once they’ve been dried off, they’ll place the snakes on your back, then the slithering begins.
As you can see, the snakes don’t mind being handled as long as it’s gently.
There are some locations that push the limits by offering snake massages given by larger snakes like pythons. To prevent them from biting, they’ll tape their mouths shut.
While I can understand how this would be relaxing, I don’t think I’d be one of those people waiting in line for this service.
I don’t even mind snakes that much. If they’re in the yard or field, I might jump but then I keep going on my way. But the feel of the snake’s skin on my bare back, legs, and face would just be too much for me. Would you dare have a snake massage?
