Nicole Graham comforts her 18-year-old horse ‘Astro’ as members of the Country Fire Authority (CFA) and the State Emergency Services (SES) attempt to free the 500kg horse Horse rescued from thick mud at Avalon Beach in Geelong, Victoria, Australia – 26 Feb 2012 Saved from tidal terror IT was a race against the tide that pulled at the heartstrings. For three hours yesterday, show horse Astro was stuck neck deep in thick mud at Avalon Beach on Corio Bay as the tide inched closer. Rescue crews first tried to pull the 18-year-old, 500kg horse free with fire hoses, and then a winch before a vet turned up to sedate Astro and pull him clear with a tractor. The crews knew by 5pm the tide would have come all the way in. But within minutes of the waters rising around him, Astro was being dragged up on to solid ground slowly but surely, the team filthy but ecstatic. This is a truly amazing story featuring a woman, a horse, and a group of dedicated rescuers on an Australian beach.
A woman was taking an evening walk with her daughter when her horse suddenly plunged into the thick mud on Avalon Beach in Geelong, Victoria. What followed, Newspix reports, was a grueling three-hour rescue that was captured in photos. When Nicole Graham saved the 18-year-old Astro’s head from drowning in the flood, members of the fire department, rescue service and a veterinarian attempted to rescue the 1,100-pound horse. They first tried fire hoses, then a winch. Veterinarian Stacey Sullivan made little progress and sedated him so he could be pulled out on a tractor.
Throughout it all, Graham stayed waist high in the mud, calming the horse through every attempt and holding his nose above the water. Luckily they were able to pull him clear before the tide came in.
I don’t think there will be anybody out there who will disagree with the fact that pets hold the same importance in the family as any other family member does! This is a story of an extremely strong between a pet and his mother! And the pet in this one is a horse!
This one is about Nicole Graham who desperately clung to her 17-year-old show horse Astro for three hours to save him from drowning in mud. She gave everything that she had to keep her horse calm and above the deadly quagmire mud as the ocean tide came dangerously close.

The problem is that Astro was stuck in mud and every effort taken to drag him out resulted in him getting stuck even further. Paris was able to call for help and Astro was sedated while a harness was attached to him so a tractor could pull him out.
It took 3 hours for rescuers to pull Astro out safely. Nicole, who owns more than 10 horses said, “It was terrifying. It was also heartbreaking to see my horse exhausted and struggling.” She added, “I’ve been riding here for 20 years and never had a drama. I’ve never seen any signs and didn’t realize it was so boggy.” Thankfully Astro suffered only dehydration and some muscle soreness.
